V4IV Member - Former mayoral candidate Ball running for Garden City City Council

Hannah Ball is taking another shot at politics in Garden City.

The developer and community organizer is running for Garden City City Council after an unsuccessful bid for mayor in 2021. Ball says she wants a seat on council to help improve her neighborhood and community.

“I want to be a voice and I want to really work to bring ideas and solutions to Garden City at large, but I want to do it through the lens of the East End, which is what I call Glenwood East,” Ball said. “I want to be a very proactive leader and I want to get a lot accomplished for our small businesses and residents.”

Affordability and tiny homes

Ball spent much of her childhood in Garden City and returned there after spending 10 years in the military. She specializes in land acquisition and development consulting.

If elected, Ball is eager to put her knowledge of land use to work. She believes her expertise could help to add more affordability when city council is deciding on land use applications.

“Understanding land use, I can really add a voice and add input and ask the development community, can you add some affordability? Can you add better connectivity? Could you add smaller units? That’s another reason why I’m excited to serve on city council is to ask the development community if they can add affordability in each project,” Ball said.

In 2021, Ball put forth a proposal for Garden City to amend its zoning code to allow tiny homes in two of the city’s zoning districts. She said the small, transportable homes will enable people making well below the median income to be able to purchase their own homes and build equity. The application is currently in a halted state but Ball says if elected, it’s a mission she will continue to support.

“Boise city recently put their first tiny house in the North End. And I feel that if the North End can have tiny houses and pilot programs, then I think we can use that data and we can use that experiment to have successful tiny houses in Garden City. So I want to stay on that mission on both the residential and the commercial side.”
